Well, the block didn't crack. It seems that a rod broke loose and ricochede off one side blowing out the wall and flew out the other....right into the starter motor. Upon removing the engine, it was also discovered that both motor mounts were broken.

Yes, that is light that you see through the block.

Thats the rod in the starter motor!

damn, that sucks.
What is going into the build?
Did the shop say what they thought happened?
Detonation, rod failure, ect?

That reminds me of my friend who threw 1 or two rods through his Prelude block. Best of luck with the build! It sucks that it took out the starter.

it was rod failure. One of the rods broke off then was shot out of the side of the block. I was at about 7k RPM from what I can remember...keep in mind it redlines at 9k.

As for the build....after today we will have a better idea of what we are going to do. They are tearing apart the head and checking for scoring in any of the walls or pistons. We may use some of the origional parts that will still work for the setup to save a little $$. This is getting more and more expensive than we had anticipated.

ya I am always afraid that I am going to end up with a flywheel in my lap one day...

Ya building that motor isn't going to be cheap. Do you know what machine shop they are going to use? Where are you getting a bare block? Are you going to go with aftermarket rods and pistons?
